If you want to go to your college by bike, what will be your first step?

Of course, first you will have to purchase a bike. The second step would be to learn to ride it. And after having good practice, once you have the confidence to drive it through busy streets and roads of your city, you will start using it to go to your college daily. It is quite obvious, if we want to use something, we must first get it. After that we must practise it, and then we can use it confidently.

There are three essential steps to learn any language:

1. Acquirement of something.

2. Practice.

3. Use

Acquirement of something.

The acquirement of something is to take possession of something. Now, it depends on that thing whether it is to be acquired physically or mentally. In both the cases possession is there. It is immaterial whether it is mental or physical possession. But the possession condition is must.

Practice

What is practice? Practice is nothing but repetition of an act. So, all the modes that help to repeat an act can be described as practice modes. It is true that the acquired thing can’t be used properly with confidence unless you have good practice. A carpenter uses his saw with ease, and cuts the log into

two halves. You also have the knowledge about the saw that it can cut the log. But with this much knowledge you can’t use it with the same ease, and cut the log. It requires practice. Practise to use saw, and cut the log. A circus girl walks comfortably on the tightrope, though, physically, she is like

you. But you can’t perform that feat. She can do it. Here the credit goes to what. Of course, the practice. It is PRACTICE that brings PROFICIENCY, and proficiency leads to PERFECTION

Use

The use of something becomes easy after good practice. So, use of something depends on practice. If you have had good practice, you can use something with ease, confidence, and without much effort. The repetitive use of that thing will make it the part of your subconscious learning.

And once something becomes the part of your subconscious learning, you use it automatically without using your conscious mind. A typist faces problem in typing something in the very beginning. He looks at the keyboard to see the right key. But once he has had good practice, he doesn’t have to look at keyboard. His right finger reaches the right key without looking at the keyboard. How does it happens? The answer lies in subconscious learning. So, if you want that something should come to you naturally, and spontaneously without any effort, you must make it a part of your subconscious learning. You will be able to use it with natural ease.

These three essential steps are applicable to English learning also. If you want to learn English, first you must acquire the knowledge of English language. After acquirement of knowledge, you must practice it. And then, you will be able to use it fluently.

Let us try to understand the problems of English learning with a simple example. Let’s presume an overhead water tank connected with a tap. There can be three probabilities:

i) No water through tap,

ii) Water comes out at low pressure,

ii) Dirty water comes out.

No water through tap signifies that the tank is empty. Water at low pressure means the tank is low on water. And dirty water connotes it is not drinkable. Now compare your status of English with these three described probabilities:

  1. You are not able to write and speak English no water is coming out of the tap.
  2. You are able to write and speak English, but not fluently and not in all situations water comes out   of the tap at low pressure.
  3. You speak and write incorrect or poor English which is not acceptable then undrinkable water comes out of the tap.

When you are not able to write or speak English, it means your tank of knowledge of English language is empty. When you are not able to write or speak fluently, it implies your tank of knowledge of English is low on knowledge. When you speak and write incorrect English which is not acceptable, it Connotes you have lots of confusions regarding English language.

When will you be able to write and speak English?

Obviously, you will be able to write and speak English, if your tank of knowledge of English language is full. The day it is full, the water will overflow. It is a natural process. You will speak and write English naturally. So, need is to fill the tank of your knowledge of English language.

The knowledge that I shared above is taken from Mukesh Sharma, the whole credit goes to the secret of learning good Enlgish book.
